Hip Pain
Hip pain can sit in the groin, on the outer hip or in the buttock, and its usual causes are arthritis, bursitis and gluteal tendon problems, labral tears and muscle strains. Some of it comes from the low back. East Mountain Physical Therapy sorts out which and treats hip pain for patients in Cedar Crest, Edgewood, Tijeras and Moriarty.
Where your hip hurts tells us a lot
Outer hip
Bursitis and gluteal tendon pain.
- Sore lying on that side
- Pain on stairs and when walking
- Strength and load management help
Groin and front of the hip
Arthritis, labral tears, hip flexor strains.
- Pinching when you sit deeply
- Groin pain with kicking or sprinting
- Motion and strength for the hip
Hip arthritis, bursitis and labral tears
Hip arthritis responds to movement and strength: keeping the joint moving keeps it functional. Outer hip bursitis and gluteal tendinopathy (greater trochanteric pain syndrome) improve as the buttock muscles get stronger and daily positions change. A labral tear or impingement is checked with specific movements, and our therapist explains what it means for your plan. See also arthritis and joint pain.
How treatment goes
Examine hip and back together
Range, strength and gait, and the low back that sits right above it.
Hands-on work
Joint mobilization and soft-tissue release for stiff, tight areas.
Strength and walking
Hip and glute strengthening on our rehab equipment, and gait training until walking feels normal.
Before and after a hip replacement
Strength before surgery helps recovery after it; see post-surgical rehab. The knee sits right below and shares many of the same problems: knee pain. Athletes with groin and hip flexor strains can read sports injury rehab, and pain low in the pelvis is a different problem, so tell us at your visit.
