Knee Pain
Knee pain, swelling or a knee that gives way usually comes from runner's knee, a meniscus tear, a ligament sprain such as the ACL, tendinitis or arthritis. Many knee injuries can be rehabbed without surgery, and when surgery is needed, therapy before and after makes a big difference. East Mountain Physical Therapy treats knees in Cedar Crest, Edgewood, Tijeras and Moriarty.
The knee problems we see most
Runner's knee
Patellofemoral pain: an ache around or behind the kneecap, worse on stairs and when squatting.
Meniscus tears
Catching, swelling and pain with twisting. Many do well with a rehab plan.
Ligament sprains and ACL tears
A knee that buckles. Strength and control are rebuilt with or without surgery.
Patellar tendinitis and IT band syndrome
Jumper's knee below the kneecap and outer-knee pain from the IT band.
Knee arthritis
Stiff, achy joints that do better with strength and the right kind of exercise.
After surgery
ACL reconstruction and knee replacement rehab are on post-surgical rehab.
Strength is the treatment
Strength, balance and cardiovascular equipment are available at our clinics, and your plan uses them: leg and hip strengthening, balance work, and walking or stair training until knee pain stops deciding what you do. Manual therapy and electrical stimulation help with swelling and pain along the way.
Hip and foot often belong to the story
A weak hip changes how the knee bends, so we look above and below: hip pain and foot and ankle pain. For arthritis in the knee see arthritis and joint pain, and for a return to sport, sports injury rehab.
