Stroke Recovery
Outpatient physical therapy after a stroke starts once you are home from the hospital or inpatient rehab and focuses on walking, balance, arm and hand use, strength and independence. Recovery can keep going for months, even years, after a stroke. East Mountain Physical Therapy treats strokes and head injuries for patients in Cedar Crest, Edgewood, Tijeras and Moriarty.
Where outpatient therapy fits after the hospital
In the hospital and in inpatient rehab, the goal is to get you safely home. Outpatient therapy picks up from there, with more time to work on what your daily life asks of you: getting in and out of a car, climbing steps, dressing, using a weak arm and hand at the table.
Our clinic in Cedar Crest has occupational therapists as well as physical therapists, so walking and arm and hand use can be worked on together.
What we work toward
Your goals set the plan.
- Walking with more confidence and less effort
- Balance, and fewer scares
- Using the weaker arm and hand for real tasks
- Strength and stamina on our on-site rehabilitation equipment
- Daily tasks done by yourself
Improvement can keep going
Weeks or years out, a plan built on repeated, specific practice can still improve how you move. We keep the exercises few and clear so you can do them at home, and we include family or caregivers when you want us to.
Shoulder pain and balance after a stroke
A weak arm can leave the shoulder sore; see shoulder pain. Ongoing dizziness and unsteadiness are worth raising at your first visit, and the clinic lists neurological conditions among the problems it treats.
