Iontophoresis
Iontophoresis treatments use topical medication, delivered through the skin with a mild electrical current, to help reduce the symptoms of tendonitis and bursitis. East Mountain Physical Therapy offers it in Cedar Crest, Edgewood, Tijeras and Moriarty as one part of a treatment plan.
How an iontophoresis treatment goes
A patch over the sore spot
A small patch holding the medication is placed on your skin over the tender tendon or bursa.
A mild current
A gentle current moves the medication through the skin. Most people feel a light tingling.
Back to your plan
It is a short part of the visit, and the rest is hands-on care and exercise for the cause.
Problems it is used for
Tendon and bursa irritation in places such as:
- Elbow tendonitis
- Shoulder tendonitis and bursitis
- Heel and Achilles tendon pain
- Hip bursitis
- Wrist and hand tendon pain
Safety and what to tell us
Tell your therapist about any allergy to medication or adhesive, skin problems in the area, and implanted devices such as a pacemaker. The medication is prescribed to you. Ask (505) 286-3678 whether your plan covers it.
