Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves to create a deep heating effect that can reduce pain, muscle spasm and joint stiffness and increase the flexibility of muscles, tendons and ligaments. East Mountain Physical Therapy offers it as one of its treatments in Cedar Crest, Edgewood, Tijeras and Moriarty.
What the heat is for
Pain and spasm
Warming deep tissue can ease a tight, painful muscle so your hands-on care and exercises go further.
Stiff joints
Heat before stretching helps a stiff joint move more freely.
Tendons and ligaments
Warmed tissue stretches more easily, which helps you regain flexibility.
What a treatment is like
A therapist moves a small, smooth applicator with gel over the sore area. You feel mild warmth, never burning, and tell your therapist if it is uncomfortable. It is a few minutes added to a visit, usually before manual therapy or exercise rather than in place of them.
Tell your therapist first if you
- have a pacemaker or an implanted device
- are pregnant
- have cancer in the area, or an area with reduced feeling
- have a metal implant or an open wound near the area
Part of a plan
Ultrasound is a supporting treatment, not the whole plan. It is used with manual therapy, electrical stimulation and exercise, for example for elbow, shoulder or back pain. Ask (505) 286-3678 about coverage.
