Post-Surgical Rehab
Physical therapy after surgery restores motion, strength and function, and therapy before surgery (prehab) helps you start stronger. East Mountain Physical Therapy provides postsurgical rehabilitation for patients in Cedar Crest, Edgewood, Tijeras and Moriarty, and follows your surgeon's protocol.
Getting stronger before the operation
Prehab means building strength and motion in the weeks before surgery, which usually makes recovery smoother. Your therapist also explains what the first days will be like and teaches the exercises you will use afterward.
Surgeries we rehabilitate
We follow the surgeon's protocol for each one.
- Total knee replacement
- Total hip replacement
- ACL reconstruction
- Rotator cuff repair
- Meniscus repair
- Spine surgery
- Foot and ankle surgery
- Carpal tunnel release
Week by week
Early weeks
Protect the repair, control swelling, and get safe motion.
Middle weeks
Build strength and normal movement, such as walking or reaching, as the protocol allows.
Return to normal
Work, home and recreation activities, with your surgeon updated along the way.
You can usually choose where to do your therapy
Many patients do not realize they can pick their own therapy clinic. Most insurance covers physical therapy if prescribed by a primary care provider or specialist, and we will check yours before the first visit when you call (505) 286-3678.
Non-surgical care for the same joints
See knee pain, hip pain, shoulder pain and back pain. If you are weighing surgery for a worn joint, arthritis and joint pain explains what therapy can do first, and athletes can read sports injury rehab.
Post-Surgical Rehab care in the East Mountains
